Usually politicians are trying to raise funds for their own campaigns, but in High Park, local representatives have put their money where their mouths are.
Four of them have pledged hard cash to help reopen the Revue, and it all happened in June at a press conference called by the Revue Film Society on a brilliant sunny morning in front of the Roncesvalles Ave. cinema.
First, Minerva Hui, representing federal MP Peggy Nash, who had to leave for Ottawa early in the day, read a statement outlining Nash’s support for the project and presented an envelope with Nash’s contribution to the Film Society’s campaign to save the theatre.
School Trustee Irene Atkinson, a High Park resident and supporter of the historic cinema, presented an envelope with her contributions, and MPP Cheri DiNovo, who plans to give away $1,000 of her monthly Queens Park salary increase to worthy causes, pledged $1,000 to the Revue and issued a matching challenge.
City councillor Gord Perks matched DiNovo’s challenge, as did future owner of the Revue Cinema building Danny Mullin.
The not-for-profit community-based Revue Film Society is heartened by the political support for the cinema, a key cultural institution in Roncesvalles village.
