Anyone who still doesn’t know the plot of Twilight is avoiding it on purpose. In the third instalment, brave, awkward Bella must chose between two perfect loves. Will she discard human life for eternally beautiful Edward, whose selfless love strengthens him to resist her blood? Will she grow old with Jacob, her fiercely loyal best friend who loves her despite continual rejection? Or will vengeful vampires kill her before she decides?
Eclipse is the strongest Twilight volume because it’s less about fantasy than choices. Bella loves everyone around her – parents, vampires, werewolves; and they all want conflicting futures for her. As she approaches high school graduation, she faces the questions all teenagers must: who am I going to be? Which life will I pursue? How will I disappoint? It’s still a ridiculously romantic fantasy, full of teen angst and absurd villains. But you knew that going in.
