This 25th anniversary screening coincides with an exhibition of work by art director and costume designer Eiko Ishioka at The Japan Foundation in Toronto. Prior to the screening, special guest Ane Crabtree, the Emmy-nominated costume designer of The Handmaid’s Tale, will join host Nathalie Atkinson for an on-stage conversation about the film’s decadent costumes and other work by the Academy Award-winning Eiko Ishioka (1938-2012).
Trained in Tokyo as a graphic designer, Ishioka began her career at cosmetics giant Shiseido in 1961 and soon became the first woman to win Japan’s most prestigious advertising award. She first met Coppola when she designed the striking Japanese posters for APOCALYPSE NOW. The director was wowed by her audacious talent and unique sensibility. “I wanted the costumes to be the set,” he wrote about DRACULA at the time. Ishioka’s work often draws imagery, inspiration and construction from the avant-garde, religious symbolism, anatomy and the natural world. Insects and reptiles inspired several of the most memorable costumes in the film.
Ishioka is recognized in the film industry for her work on DRACULA and later, on Tarsem Singh’s THE FALL, MIRROR MIRROR, THE IMMORTALS and THE CELL. Her production design for Paul Schrader’s Mishima: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS received a special Cannes prize for artistic contribution. Ishioka also contributed to the 2002 and 2008 Olympics and designing the dazzling stage costumes of Broadway’s M. BUTTERFLY, Cirque du Soleil: VAREKAI and the Dutch National Opera’s production of of DER RING. Ishioka won a Grammy award for her 1986 album design of Tutu by Miles Davis and her indelible work on Bram Stoker’s DRACULA earned her an Oscar. Other exquisitely detailed and surreal creative output ranges from the direction of Björk’s 1992 “Cocoon” video to Grace Jones’ 2009 tour costumes.
A costume designer for film and television, Ane Crabtree made an immediate and lasting impression when she created the look for THE SOPANOS original HBO pilot, The WESTWORLD series and LUCK for HBO, and THE HANDMAID’S TALE for Hulu.
Born in South Dakota and raised in Kentucky, Ane studied fine arts at Harlaxton College in Lincolnshire, England and fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Her singular vision has her working well with a wide range of directors and producers, including Warren Littlefield, Mimi Leder, Michael Apted, Michael Mann, and David Milch, and Robert Kirkman.
She is known for her personal touch with actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, Ann Dowd, Elisabeth Moss, Dustin Hoffman, Viola Davis, Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas, Lizzy Caplan, and Michael Sheen. Ane is currently designing for THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season 2 starring Elizabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, and Samira Wiley. Her recent work includes the SCOTTFREE/FOX pilot for THE PASSAGE. She was nominated for a Costume Design Guild Award for PANAM (2012), MASTERS OF SEX (2015), and WESTWORLD (2016). Her films include the Sundance premiering LILA & EVE and PLEASE GIVE, the Tribeca Film Festival premiering EVERY DAY, and THE CODE. Ane’s most recent achievement is being Emmy nominated for THE HANDMAID’S TALE Season One.
