More than being a movie about romance and love, CHOCOLAT is a film about defying convention, breaking with tradition, and the relationships that women foster with one another in the face of adversity.
Evoking a sense of mysticism and witchcraft, CHOCOLAT uses the sensory power of cacao to question the Church, and what is deemed sin. Chocolate plays a powerful role in exposing hypocrisy and pain in an otherwise traditional, Catholic village undergoing the period of Lent.
But in doing so, the creation of chocolate confections, cakes, and hot cocoa bring together a community of women who find the inner strength to go against the status quo for the sake of their own well-being.
And yes, there might be a romance or two.
