The Hunchback of Notre Dame
1923
(Wallace Worsley)
G, 90 minutes - Silent with piano accompaniment by William O'Meara
Brandon Hurst, Lon Chaney, Norman Kerry, Patsy Ruth Miller
Lon Chaney Sr.’s performance in this film is essential viewing for fans of horror and early cinema. He created his own makeup, which is both repulsive and piteous. It consisted of a misshapen face, distorted by mortician’s wax; a mouth wired open, full of fang-like teeth; a wig of matted hair; and a skin-tight rubber suit, plastered with animal hair, that prevented him from standing upright. The film elevated Chaney to star status. Toronto’s William O’Meara will provide live accompaniment for this tragic Gothic tale of medieval Paris and the cathedral’s deformed, but noble bell ringer.
