A Special Book Revue: Tuesday, Aug. 21
Goin' Down the Road with Don Shebib and Geoff Pevere
Our next books and film program takes place Tuesday, Aug. 21.
And it will be unusual.
We're pairing Don Shebib's landmark film Goin' Down the Road, with our Book Revue host Geoff Pevere's just released book about the film.
Titled Donald Shebib’s Goin’ Down the Road, it's co-published by U of T Press and TIFF and is part of the Canadian Cinema series.
Starting at 5:30 p.m., there will be a book launch reception for Geoff, with a licensed cash bar and complimentary food.
This event is co-presented by The Revue, U of T Press and TIFF, along with Union Pictures and The Word on the Street, that annual celebration on Sept. 23 of Canadian authors. (The Word on the Street will provide some book giveaways.)
Both Geoff and Don, who lives in the neighbourhood, will be at the cinema for the screening and discussion. Plus, actor Doug McGrath and screenwriter Bill Fruet will attend.
We're also offering a double bill. We're showing Don Shebib's 2011 sequel Down the Road Again at 9:15 p.m. after a post-screening discussion of the 1970 Canadian classic.
This will be a terrific opportunity to watch both films, especially because this will be the first public screening of Union Picture's digital restoration of Goin' Down the Road. And we'll be showing it with The Revue's brand new digital projector.
Check out the book and see what Geoff has to say about the film's place as a Canadian cultural touchstone. We have a few copies on sale at the cinema.
As Geoff wrote in the prologue, this roadtrip movie about two guys from Cape Breton heading west to Toronto "is our belated Birth of a Nation, our westward-hos(er) Stagecoach and our blue-collar Easy Rider all packed into one beat up hundred-buck convertible Impala."
Don's sequel, of course, looks at what happened to Joey and Peter after they abandoned Toronto, and headed further west. Did their luck change?
Here's the pricing for the event: For a special book launch package, we're offering the reception, the book and the two films for $20 for seniors and members; $26 for non-members, which also includes a membership. (Regular price for the book is $16.95.)
Tickets just for the films: $10 for members and seniors for one film, and $13 for non-members. Add $4 for the second film.
A number of copies of Geoff's book are now on sale at the cinema.
Please note that we've had to move the date to Aug. 21 because of the digital upgrade of The Revue's projection system.
From now on, the Book Revue takes place every two months. Coming up Tuesday, Oct. 30 is The Shining and Tuesday, Dec. 11, Fantastic Mr. Fox.
