Our next food and film event promises to be a sweet evening

The Theme: Honey. Just two days after Thanksgiving, we'll have the opportunity to celebrate and learn about honey, and bees, and the spreading problem of bee colony collapse. 

The Film: Colonya documentary about beekeeping, and the problems faced by two brothers trying to keep the family beekeeping business going.

The Host: Chef Joshna Maharaj. 

Special Guest: Local beekeeper (and management consultant) Fred Davis. 

Tickets: At the door. $10 for Revue members and seniors; $12 for non-members.

There’s a lot more buzz around Casa Loma and the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts these days, thanks to Fred Davis.

He’s harvesting about 500 pounds of honey a year from three hives at Toronto’s castle on the hill and six hives on the roof of the performing arts centre at University and Queen, where the Canadian Opera Company and National Ballet of Canada perform.

He’ll be bringing some of that buzz to The Revue for our next food and film event on Wednesday, October 12, for another food and film event that starts at 6:30 p.m.

Each month, the 99-year-old cinema on Roncesvalles Ave. holds an Epicure’s Revue, featuring a food-themed movie, special guests and free samples from local restaurants, all hosted by Toronto chef and locavore Joshna Maharaj.

Fred, who makes his living as a management consultant, will bring some of his apiarist’s paraphernalia, including clothing and hive boxes to show how beekeeping is done. He’ll also bring samples from early and late honey harvests, so that people at the cinema can savour the differences in flavours.

He’ll be on hand to answer questions and share his fascination with bees and their miraculous communication system. With a sideways figure-8 flight pattern and strategic shaking of their little butts, the scout bees are able to signal a food source’s distance from the hive and location relative to the sun’s changing position.

Fred says there are ample food sources for his rooftop city dwellers, with the gardens around Osgoode Hall, the city’s flowering trees and the floral median up University Ave., not to mention private gardens. The bees fly three to five kilometres from the hive to forage, Davis says.

As part of the evening, we’ll be screening Colony, a 2009 documentary that was featured at TIFF. It looks at the challenges presented by the phenomena of disappearing bees and colony collapse, and what that means for beekeepers and our food supply.  It also showcases the beauty of bees and the blooms that feed them.

Local restaurants, including The Chocolateria, Lardon, Soup ‘n’ Such Café (honey roasted parsnip soup) and Pizzeria Defina, will be providing complimentary samples made with honey.
