2016 (Pablo Larrain) 14A, 107 minutes

Gael García Bernal, Luis Gnecco, Alfredo Castro

This gripping biopic by Chilean director Pablo Larrain centers on the famous poet Pablo Neruda, who became a fugitive in his own country after joining the Communist Party. Framed as a manhunt between Pablo Neruda and Inspector Oscar Peluchonneau, Neruda depicts both the romance of the poet’s life as well as the deadly fallout of Chile’s Communist witch hunt. As the Globe and Mail’s Eva Salinas observes, Neruda begs the question “is [it] a cinematic play, a poem, a biopic? In this near-perfect homage to a literary giant, it's all open to interpretation.”
