Film term of the day: mumblecore. Coined in 2005, the genre refers to low-budget movies shot on digital video and populated by semi-pro actors speaking semi-improvised dialogue. Baghead is a prime example. Written and directed by mumblecore masters the Duplass brothers (2005's The Puffy Chair), this DIY dramedy and horror flick centres on four struggling Hollywood actors (two women, two men). They escape to a wilderness cabin and intend to write a screenplay. Drinking and sexual tension ensue. When one of the women dreams about a man in the woods with a paper bag over his head, the gang's nascent script gains a focus. Then a real bag head appears. As the real and fictional blur, the ingenious Baghead and its hardworking cast generate plenty of frights, humour and interpersonal insight.
