Black Caesar
1973 (Larry Cohen) R, 100 min
Starring: Art Lund, Fred Williamson, Gloria Hendry, Julius Harris, Phillip Roye
A remake of the 1931 film Little Caesar, this is a blaxploitation film, a genre emerging in the early 1970s that catered to black audiences and indulged in stereotyping, both of ghetto characters and whites, who were invariably portrayed as corrupt. Tommy Gibbs, played by Williamson in a performance described as "charismatic and frighteningly fiery" by the All Movie Guide, has pushed his way to the top of Harlem's underworld. He's now in a position to take revenge on nasty racist cop John McKinney, who crippled Gibbs when he was a shoeshine boy. With a musical score by Godfather of Soul James Brown, including "Down and Out in New York City", the film "is one of the true highlights of the blaxploitation genre and well worth the time for cult movie fans," says All Movie Guide. The genre, which is believed to have started with Shaft, was short-lived, but continues to inspire contemporary film, music and fashion.
