Bride of Frankenstein
1935 (James Whale) PG, 75 min
Starring: Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Elsa Lanchester, Ernest Thesiger
The Revue is proud to present Creepy Classics, a new series highlighting the great horror films of the ’30s and ’40s. First to be screened: James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein, considered by many to be the crown jewel of Universal Horror’s Golden Age. When his wife is kidnapped by the mad Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), Baron Frankenstein (Colin Clive) is forced to help build a mate for the Monster (Boris Karloff), believed to have been destroyed at the end of the first film. Before this 1935 production, Whale had directed other horror movies (The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man) but objected to a sequel to his first Frankenstein (1931) until script demands were met. The resulting film is full of humorous moments, most delivered by Thesiger and kooky stock-actor Una O'Connor; and rich in pathos, including the memorable friendship between monster and blind hermit, later parodied by Gene Hackman in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. The film also feature beautiful Elsa Lanchester, in one of her few horror roles, playing both the iconic bride and writer Mary Shelley in the opening sequence.
Admission to Creepy Classics offers much more than the main feature – a chilling prologue of cartoons, shorts and ghoulish trailers, all on 16mm. Expect to see many of your favourite monsters on the big screen!
