Coraline
2009 (Henry Selick) PG, 100 min
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher
The first-ever 3D stop-motion animated movie, Coraline is directed by stop motion master Henry Selick (The Nightmare before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach) and based on Neil Gaiman's award-winning novella of the same name. A prolific dark-fantasy writer, Neil Gaiman is known for his seminal comic series Sandman and the feature film Mirrormask, as well as many other literary works. The film tells the story of Coraline who, growing frustrated with her loving but distracted parents, discovers a parallel world similar to her own, but with parents who are much more attentive. One big difference: where their eyes should be, they have buttons instead. Coraline's alternative world, says the Toronto Star, "simultaneously enchants, terrifies and instructs – the lesson being contained in the tagline adage, 'Be careful what you wish for.'"
Note: The Revue will be screening the 2D film version.
