The Cove
2009 (Louie Psihoyos) PG, 91 min
Starring: Documentary
The Cove follows 1960s Flipper dolphin trainer-turned-activist Ric O'Barry's quest to document the dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan. The town is seemingly devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the dolphins and whales that live near the coast, but in a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by wire, lies a grim reality. Migrating dolphins are herded into this cove, netted and killed by fishermen in small boats. Director Psihoyos, a former National Geographic photographer, initially wanted to make the film with permission, but learned that the local and national governments would not cooperate. As a result, he uses custom camouflaged high-definition cameras to capture footage. This is a wake-up call to anyone who doesn't already know that the capture, "training" and public display of dolphins for human entertainment is akin to slavery, and that the all-too-common hunting of dolphins for human consumption is hurtling the species ever closer to extinction.
