It Might Get Loud
2009 (Davis Guggenheim) PG, 97 min
Starring: Jack White, Jimmy Page, The Edge
It Might Get Loud is a documentary film by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Deadwood) which explores the history of the electric guitar focusing on the prolific careers and varying styles of Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and The Edge (U2). The film explores each of these guitarists' beginnings, initial inspirations and forays into music. It's an interesting choice of musicians: Jimmy Page, a seasoned studio and session musician, rejected the popular music that came before him and embraced rock and blues, eventually becoming part of the iconic excess of 70s Led Zeppelin. The Edge rejected the rock excesses of the 70s and embraced the use of guitar technology, punk and new wave. A kind of purist, Jack White rejected the excesses of the 80s & 90, possibly exemplified by U2, and embraced the blues, coming full circle.
