Master animator Hayao Miyazaki is the director behind films such as Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004) and the transcendent children's film My Neighbour Totoro (1998). The narrative of Ponyo, loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid, tells the story of the young boy, Sosuke, who find, what he believes to be a goldfish trapped in a bottle. Upon rescuing the fish, he names her Ponyo. Ponyo uses her father's magic to transform into a human and falls in love with Sosuke. The film is full of visually stunning, hand-drawn, lush animation and touches on common Miyazaki themes such as environmentalism, love, the earth's fragility. And, like many other Miyazaki creations, Ponyo presents a memorable and strong female protagonist.
