West is West
2010
(Andy DeEmmony)
14A, 96 minutes
Aqib Khan, Om Puri, Linda Bassett
In this sequel to East is East, patriarch George Khan (Puri) returns to Pakistan with his youngest son Sajid. Sajid, struggling with life as a half-English, half-Pakistani kid in 1970s England, has taken to petty crime, and George hopes a taste of life back in Punjab will straighten him out and put things in perspective. But Sajid isn't the only one in for culture shock, as George is faced with his ex-wife and grown children, and a country that has changed in his absence. A lively and heartwarming comedy, highlighted by Om Puris's performance as George Khan, who The Hollywood Reporter calls "truly one of the great comic roles of recent British films." Says The Globe & Mail’s Rick Groen: “Such energy, indeed. East Is East had it, and West Is West is identically blessed. Here, frantically and maddeningly and yet with surprising warmth, the twain not only meet but embrace.”
