A League of Their Own

USA | 1992 | 128 min | 14A

Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amidst their own growing rivalry.

Let’s hit one out of the park for Penny Marshall, the late, great director of this home run of a film about sisterhood (in sports and in life). A League of Their Own follows the Rockford Peaches, one of the most successful teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was designed to keep the boys club of a sport alive during World War II. With an all-star cast led by Geena Davis, Penny’s take on the Peaches’ true story was a huge hit at the time of its release and remains the highest grossing film about baseball of all-time. It also features a devastating original song by Madonna (who co-stars as “All the Way” Mae)! Despite what Tom Hanks says, crying and laughing are encouraged at this screening as we toast to Penny, who, much like the Peaches, continues to inspire generations of women to go to bat for themselves and others. – EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERG
