ADAPTATION – Nicolas Cage 60th Birthday Celebration!

USA | 2002 | 115 minutes | 14A

Celebrate the 60th birthday of a capricious, fascinating, at times profoundly perplexing, and yet always captivating modern master with one his most celebrated 21st-century works, ADAPTATION. The film that garnered Nicolas Cage his second Oscar nom (he was robbed), Spike Jonze’s ADAPTATION is a crown jewel in the UnCaged canon. Deeply meta-, surrealist, heartfelt, and hilarious, and yet somewhat sinister, ADAPTATION is an incomparable, highly re-watchable masterpiece, largely due to Cage’s dual performance as twin brothers Charlie and Donald Kaufman.

A personal rumination on writer’s block and jealousy, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman imagines himself adapting Susan Orlean’s real-life celebrated bestseller The Orchid Thief and conjures Donald Kaufman, a fantastical alter-ego, representing what Kaufman wishes he could be but is so tragically not. With Meryl Streep portraying Orleans and a career-making performance from Chris Cooper as Orlean’s subject of interest, ADAPTATION is an acting masterclass. Cue: supporting performances from Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton, and an expletive-favouring Brian Cox, ADAPTATION is unmissable. (ALICIA FLETCHER and BRENDAN ROSS)
