BENEATH MODERN LONDON LIVES A TRIBE OF ONCE HUMANS. NEITHER MEN NOR WOMEN… THEY ARE THE RAW MEAT OF THE HUMAN RACE!
There’s something pretty grisly going on under London in the Tube tunnels between Holborn and Russell Square. When a top civil servant becomes the latest to disappear down there Scotland Yard start to take the matter seriously. Helping them are a young couple who get nearer to the horrors underground than they would wish.
Predating such cannibal classics as THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, the film was released in the United States under the more lurid title RAW MEAT, hoping to lure in an audience hungry for cheap thrills and gore. What they got was so much more. A somewhat absurd police procedural intertwined in a political allegory of the working class, with a touch of Frankenstein thrown in for good measure. Christopher Lee shows up specifically to share a scene with Donald Pleasence, who shines as the eccentric Inspector Calhoun. – Steven Landry
