DISTURBING BEHAVIOR (25th Anniversary Screening!)

USA | 1998 | 84 minutes | 14A

25th Anniversary Screening!

If you grew up in the 90’s this movie is guaranteed to get under your skin. Teen Beat centerfold James Marsden (X-Men, Dead To Me, 27 Dresses) stars as the moody, misunderstood new kid in Cradle Bay. The local high school is strange, but its rules are simple – kids in collegiate sweater-vests are the preppy kids; anyone in flannel, ripped denim, or shoulder-length hair that does that Zack Morris swooshy thing when they run their hand through it – is a hormonal deviant who must be brainwashed into conformity and servitude to the school’s psychologist.

With a muddied message of rebellion for clout, non-conformity, and an overarching disdain for mental health, DisturbingBehaviour is peak 90’s paranoia with the heart of a sad Pearl Jam song – or an upbeat Radiohead song. Join us at Revue Cinema on November 30th for a nostalgic revisit of the film critics are calling “The Stepford Wives, A Clockwork Orange, and Children of the Corn all tangled up in a loose net” and “really long for an episode of The X-Files”. (It’s me. I’m critics.)

Director: David Nutter
Cast: James Marsden, Katie Holmes, Nick Stahl

DETAILS

“DisturbingBehavior” is a film that takes high school angst to a whole new level, and by “new level,” we mean a level that’s both unsettling and oddly amusing. Picture this: a picturesque suburban town where all the teens seem like they’ve stepped straight out of a Gap commercial, with their perfectly combed hair and wholesome smiles. But there’s a twist. These kids are about as normal as a unicorn in rush hour traffic. They’re part of a secret club, and no, it’s not your typical chess or drama club. They’ve all been “programmed” to be the epitome of polite and well-behaved citizens. Imagine the horror of your teenager suddenly turning into a Stepford child without the creepy robot vibes. And yes, it’s as disturbing as it sounds.

Enter our fearless protagonist, played by James Marsden, who’s the new kid in town and, unsurprisingly, not too thrilled about fitting into this cookie-cutter mold. With the help of a few like-minded friends, he embarks on a quest to uncover the sinister truth behind the town’s pristine facade. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they discover that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill teenage rebellion. It’s a mind-bending rollercoaster filled with twists, turns, and a whole lot of sarcasm that will make you question whether high school was really as “normal” as you thought. So, strap in and get ready for a wild ride through teen angst, mind control, and some seriously dark humor. (ALICE ROSE)
