55th Anniversary Screening! 4K Restoration!
Paths (and many swords) cross at a remote outpost during the Ming dynasty when the Emperor’s Minister of Defense is framed and executed by a corrupt power-hungry eunuch. Pursued by a group of assassins, his surviving children flee towards the Dragon Gate Inn where a mysterious band of strangers begin to gather, intent on protecting the innocent and delivering justice.
King Hu’s immensely influential DRAGON INN forever changed the art of martial arts filmmaking. His first film after leaving Shaw Bros in Hong Kong to pursue greater creative freedom in Taiwan modernized the wuxia/swordplay film the same way Peckinpah and Leone changed the Western. Hu’s kinetic sense of editing, dance-like choreography, and breathtakingly violent sword battles set against picturesque landscapes return to the screen beautifully restored in 4k by Criterion at the Revue Cinema. – Brandon Lim
