When a group of Concerned Birds decides it is no longer appropriate for Big Bird to live on Sesame Street, they send Miss Finch, a bird social worker, to “rescue” Big Bird and place him in a respectable Bird Family far away from the street he loves.
At first Big Bird tries to fit in with his feathered foster family, but when they tell him his best friend should be a bird and not Mr. Snuffleupagus, Big Bird decides to run away. As his escape makes national news, his friends from Sesame Street send out search parties to find him before Miss Finch or other nefarious characters get to him first. Will they find him in time, and what does a family look like, anyhow?Shot entirely in the Toronto Area, “Follow That Bird” is the first Sesame Street feature film produced by the Jim Henson Company and the Children’s Television Workshop. Following the traditional muppet format of musical numbers and celebrity cameos, “Follow That Bird” boasts a wealth of Canadian talent, including John Candy, Dave Thomas, and Joe Flaherty. “Follow That Bird” was also the first film Alyson Court (who would later become Loonette the Clown on “The Big Comfy Couch”) appeared in, as a child who helps Big Bird while he’s on the run. –CRYSTAL MADORE
