Harriet The Spy

USA | 1996 | 102 min | PG

Harriet (Michelle Trachtenberg) may only be in the sixth grade, but she’s already found her calling: to be a spy. In a private journal she takes everywhere, Harriet records suspicious activity and keeps a running list of observations on virtually everyone she knows. It seems harmless enough until, one day, someone finds the journal and exposes Harriet’s critical thoughts about her classmates. Suddenly, even her best friends are against her, and Harriet resolves to take revenge.

The first film produced by Nickelodeon Movies, the Toronto-shot Harriet the Spy is a bold, brightly-coloured adaptation of Louise Fitzhugh’s beloved book about an aspiring writer (Michelle Trachtenberg as the titular Harriet) who “spies” on her friends, foes and unsuspecting neighbours in her spare time. A children’s film that actually treats children like people, Harriet the Spy offers a timeless peek into what it’s like to be a very *PRIVATE* tween girl. Also, did we mention that it co-stars Rosie O’Donnell (as Harriet’s nanny Golly) and features an incredible cameo from Eartha Kitt?

So join We Really Like Her! co-hosts Emily and Danita on as they take a closer look at one of the best coming-of-age films of the ’90s. Yellow raincoats and magnifying glasses optional. – EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERG
