DETAILS
Neon Dreams is proud to present Heartbreakers, a brilliantly observed and emotionally poignant mood piece on sex, relationships, and big city living. Set to a dreamy score by Tangerine Dream and stunningly shot by legendary cinematographer Michael Balhaus (After Hours, Bram Stoker’s Dracula), Heartbreakers delivers pristine hangout vibes and a unique view into the personal lives of the artists, business professionals, and aerobics instructors that occupy Los Angeles in the mid-80s.
Peter Coyote is Blue, a struggling artist recently shattered by a breakup. Nick Mancuso is his best friend Eli, a businessman playboy who, following the death of his father, becomes disillusioned with his life in the fast lane of fancy suits and one-night stands. Through their own personal crises, their lifelong bond is threatened as they navigate their lives and learn what it means to grow up as they approach middle age.
Director Bobby Roth based his screenplay on his own experiences growing up in Los Angeles, and gives the film an insider’s perspective when shooting the late night diners, health clubs, and neon-lit streets that make the city look and feel positively sublime. Despite being a film festival favourite and adored by film critics, it has been out of print and unavailable for years. Newly restored and rescued from obscurity by the fine folks at Fun City Editions, we are thrilled to be able to help this lost gem find the audience it deserves. (BRENDAN ROSS)
