USA, 1971, 114 mins, R

Although technically named after another character (detective John Klute, played by Donald Sutherland), Klute truly belongs to Jane Fonda’s Bree Daniels, a sex worker who gets entangled in a missing persons investigation after receiving obscene letters and phone calls. The first in Alan J. Pakula’s three-part “paranoia trilogy” (see also: The Parallax View and All the President’s Men), the crime thriller was a fresh start for Fonda both personally and professionally, resulting in her first Oscar win. And then, of course, there is Bree’s iconic shag haircut and turtleneck-filled wardrobe, which was inspired by Fonda’s own style at the time.
