Spend the holiday season with the March sisters as We Really Like Her! presents Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
With a star-studded cast that includes Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst and Susan Sarandon, this warm and whimsical version of the classic novel has a timeless feel despite being set in a very specific time and place: 19th century New England. Following sisters Meg (Trini Alvarado), Jo (Ryder), Beth (Danes) and Amy (Dunst as a child and Samantha Mathis as an adult), the film explores the inner workings of girls as each character experiences different trials and tribulations on their journey to becoming a woman. We’re talking about everything from sacrificial haircuts and sibling sabotage to internalized sexism and scarlet fever!
Oh yeah, and there are some men in it, too: Christian Bale and Eric Stoltz as family friends/love interests Theodore “Laurie” Laurence and John Brooke, and Gabriel Byrne as Professor Bhaer. But as the book’s title suggests, the heart of this film is its female characters, with each actress (including a superb Sarandon as March matriarch Marmee) bringing unique nuances to their well-known roles, separating their performances from previous ones and setting the stage for future adaptations (see: Greta Gerwig’s equally excellent 2018 film).
So grab the Amy to your Jo and join We Really Like Her! co-hosts Emily and Danita for a pre-Christmas screening of one of the best ensemble dramas of the early ’90s. Limes, while always in fashion, will not be accepted as payment.
