STOMPBOX: MAHAKAAL – India’s Nightmare on Elm Street – 30th Anniversary!

Newly scanned in 2K from the original uncut and uncensored 35mm camera negatives – enter the Ramsay House of Horror and experience this all-time Hindi-language horror like never before! MAHAKAAL borrows A LOT from Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and its sequels, including its Freddy Krueger-esque burned-face villain, Shakaal – a razor-gloved child killer who can murder people through their dreams – and the haunted young lovers who band together to try to stop this evil, once and for all.

But does A Nightmare On Elm Street burst into musical numbers at every opportunity? NO! Boiler rooms, cobwebbed corridors, banging tunes, beachfront dancing, unholy rituals, waterbeds, a gruff cop-dad with a terrible secret, razored hands bursting out of walls and floors, a giant evil demon ball made of bodies much like Michele Soavi’s THE CHURCH, plus Michael Jackson (?). Can anyone or anything bring an end to the carnage? MAHAKAAL delivers the goods.

Packed with musical numbers and wild ghastly set design and visuals, this is the Bollywood horror fix you’re after! (DAVID BERTRAND)
