Melvin and Howard

USA | 1980 | 95 mins | 14A

When luckless dreamer Melvin Dummar (Paul Le Mat) rescues a grizzled, half-dead man (Jason Robards) from the desert, he’s skeptical of the man’s claim that he’s actually reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes. But in the wake of Hughes’ death a decade later, a will appears naming Melvin the recipient of $156 million, and a media circus ensues. Accused of forgery, Melvin vigorously maintains his innocence despite a strong intuition that he’ll never see any of the money.

Director: Jonathan Demme
Cast: Paul Le Mat, Mary Steenburgen

Neon Dreams is a Toronto, ON based film series bringing you the best in delightfully surreal neo-noir cinema from the ’70s, ’80s, and beyond. PAST (more…)

One of the funniest, sweetest and most sincere pursuits of the American Dream to come out of the New Hollywood era. Jonathan Demme’s Melvin & Howard is pure exuberant delight that, whilst evoking the freewheeling best of Hal Ashby and Robert Altman, reinforces that cinema can and will take us anywhere it wants.

A major influence on Paul Thomas Anderson—there are glimmers of Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Master, and even Licorice Pizza sparkling throughout—Melvin & Howard takes you on an epic journey from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City that will undoubtedly leave you with a smile on your face from start to finish. If you’re interested in a film free of cynicism, opting instead to relish in the joys and tribulations of just being alive, then we are urging you to come see the film that, despite earning Mary Steenburgen a well deserved Oscar, has gone by largely unnoticed for far too long.
