Fifth Avenue socialite Irene Bullock needs a “forgotten man” to win a scavenger hunt, and no one fits that description more than Godfrey Park, who resides in a dump by the East River. Irene hires Godfrey as a servant for her riotously unhinged family, to the chagrin of her spoiled sister, Cornelia, who tries her best to get Godfrey fired. As Irene falls for her new butler, Godfrey turns the tables and teaches the frivolous Bullocks a lesson or two.

DETAILS
The definitive screwball comedy! And a peerless showcase for original screwball dame Carole Lombard’s dazzling repartee with quintessentially urbane William Powell.
In her most famous role (and costumes by the incomparable Travis Banton), Carole Lombard is the kind-hearted but flaky socialite who hires a vagrant (Powell) as butler to her dysfunctional Fifth Avenue family. Sparks fly as the cynical Powell turns the tables on this group of “empty-headed nitwits” and her magnanimity gets taught a few lessons—as does her sister and rival Cornelia (a coolly antagonistic Gail Patrick). Frivolity and glamour pair with satire and a social conscience in this glittering world—although unlike real life, the resonant Depression-era concerns of the ‘forgotten man,’ gentrification, and income inequality are as tidily resolved by the end of the picture as the romance. The madcap humour and sparkling dialogue earned MY MAN GODFREY Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay and Picture, and in all four acting categories. Presented with an introduction by series host Nathalie Atkinson.
