45th Anniversary Screening!
IF THIS ONE DOESN’T SCARE YOU, YOU’RE ALREADY DEAD.
Newly orphaned teenager Mike Pearson, his older brother Jody, and their friends face off against a mysterious grave robber known as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons in their southern California town.
It is a film that truly meets the core aesthetic of a “Nightmare Alley” pick, where genre meets art-house, with a willingness to exist in a dream within a dream. Writer/Director Don Coscarelli took over a year to craft this truly independent film, working only on weekends, relying on friends and family, using rented equipment and stolen electricity.
The result is a unique combination of frightening, funny, and deeply, deeply weird, more concerned with vibes and spectacle than it is with story or common sense, making it all the more mesmerizing. Anchored by the late Angus Scrimm’s towering and alien performance as the iconic Tall Man, and thanks to the new 4K restoration produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot, PHANTASM has never looked and sounded better, ready to entrance and bemuse new audiences and franchise fans alike. – Steven Landry
