RENT (2005)

USA | 2005 | 135 | PG

Gay Christmas has arrived, and this year HOLD UP is celebrating the holidays with Broadway on a Budget! So gather your chosen family, pull your furs out of storage, dust off your finest monocle, and join us for a festive holiday screening of the acclaimed 2005 musical, RENT. If you ever wanted the experience of a night at the opera without actually having to sit through an opera, this is the night for you!

A tale about a handful of East Village bohemians struggling with the burden of rent on Christmas Eve, RENT explores the uncertainty of youth entering the 90’s amidst the HIV epidemic.  Although based in New York’s East Village, Rent serves big Toronto vibes. Its characters (of whom 6 of 8 are revised by their original Broadway cast members) explore sexuality, drugs, and counterculture in the face of gentrification and housing costs. Truly, what’s more Toronto than struggling to pay rent? (ALICE ROSE)
