ABOUT THE NEON DREAMS SERIES
Neon Dreams is a Toronto, ON based film series bringing you the best in delightfully surreal neo-noir cinema from the ’70s, ’80s, and beyond. PAST (more…)
The breakout hit of the lockdown era’s Neon Streams, Starstruck is Aussie auteur Gillian Armstrong’s New Wave homage to Busby Berkeley musicals and A Star is Born. Featuring production design from Brian Thompson of Rocky Horror fame, as well as key performances from New Zealand’s pop-punk royalty The Stranglers and tracks from Split Enz, Starstruck was Oceania’s answer to the wave of American indie feminist punk cornerstones—films such as Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains and Smithereens.
The follow-up to her audacious debut My Brilliant Career, Armstrong broke the mold with her sophomoric, blasphemous frolic into the pursuit of music stardom. Casting newcomer Jo Kennedy—a frontwoman in Sydney’s underground punk clubs—as Jackie Mullens, an aspiring singer and daughter of a barkeep, along with 14-year-old Ross O’Donovan as her orphaned cousin and dedicated manager, Armstrong proved her ability at movie alchemy.
Slapped with a dreaded NFC rating (Not-For-Children) due to its light nudity and celebration of queer lives, Starstruck was a failure at the box office. However, it didn’t take long for it to ascend to bonafide cult classic status with repeated television screenings throughout both Oceania and North America. Upon its 40th anniversary, Neon Dreams is proud to present the NFSA’s stunning restoration of one of Australia’s 80s neon-infused gems, in the format it’s meant to be seen—played as loud as possible and on the big screen! – ALICIA FLETCHER
