DETAILS

30th Anniversary Screening! Presented On Rare 35mm Print!

This July, join Dumpster Raccoon Cinema for its FIFTH ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR (!!!) as it celebrates with an ultra-rare screening of its most sought-after and requested film (itself marking its 30th anniversary!!), 1993’s live-action video game dystopia, SUPER MARIO BROS!!!!

Join Brooklyn plumbing brothers Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins!!) and Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo!!) as they plunge into a nether-dimensional nightmare – a chaotic otherworldly cityscape where the meteor that killed the dinosaur never fell, now overrun with benevolent fungus, de-evolved saurian shock-troops, and a raging, Trumpian despot King Koopa (Dennis Hopper???) and his slinking scheming major domo (Fiona Shaw?!?!) Can the two brothers save the plucky princess (Samantha Mathis), or will the reign of the dinosaur last forever??

Critically panned and badly misunderstood, SUPER MARIO BROS was reviled by adults and children (and its stars) alike – but even as it slipped from the public consciousness and circulation, a massive reappraisal of its ambitious project and its totally unique vision has taken place. It is now regarded as one of the great examples of eighties/nineties neo-noir, and a perfect Baby’s First Dystopia.

Join Dumpster Raccoon Cinema’s rowdy queer audience and host Anthony Oliveira for this special fifth anniversary of our programme and the film’s 30th anniversary, featuring a drag performance from one of Toronto’s brightest drag stars and signature cocktail by Shameful Tiki Room, generously sponsored by Meridian Credit Union! (ANTHONY OLIVEIRA)
