ABOUT THE CRYBABY MINI-SERIES

Curated and hosted by Danita Steinberg, Cry Baby is a mini-series featuring three classic tearjerkers: The Bridges of Madison County (1995), Beaches (1988), and On Golden Pond (1981). This summer (in the safe, sacred space that is the Revue Cinema), we’re feeling our feelings about love, friendship, and family!

DETAILS

Get your hankies ready because we’re taking a heartbreaking trip to Madison County, Iowa with Crybaby programmer and host Danita Steinberg.

Set in both 1965 and the present day, The Bridges of Madison County (1995) begins with brother and sister, Carolyn (Annie Corley) and Michael (Victor Slezak), arriving at their childhood home to sort through their recently deceased mother, Francesca’s (Meryl Streep) belongings. Through her diary, they learn about an intense, four-day affair she had with National Geographic photographer, Robert (Clint Eastwood). On assignment to capture the famous covered bridges, Robert meets Francesca, an Italian housewife, by chance and is instantly smitten. With her husband and children out of town for a state fair over the long weekend, Francesca rediscovers her sensuality and passion, making her question everything about her current, seemingly humdrum life.

Nominated for an Oscar, Streep gives one of her best, most charismatic performances, disappearing into her role as Francesca and creating dynamite chemistry with Eastwood. Mostly known for directing westerns, Eastwood has a surprisingly sensitive touch here, with framing and lighting that is visually breathtaking. The Bridges of Madison County is equal parts intimate and sweeping ⸺ a film that truly demands to be seen on the big screen. (DANITA STEINBERG)
