On July 9th, Neon Dreams and Revue Cinema celebrate Tom Hanks’ birthday with THE ‘BURBS. A sacred text for ’80s kids and a film that mixes satanism and suburbia to conjure up one of the strangest and most subversive crowd-pleasers of the decade.
Hanks plays Ray Peterson, a suburban dad on vacation from work who just wants to “hang around, be lazy, listen to the ball game, drink a couple hundred beers, and smoke an occasional cigar… outside.” Unfortunately his plans are thwarted by the arrival of his new neighbors The Klopeks who may or may not be murdering people and burying them in their backyard. This suspicion leads Ray and his questionable neighbours down a rabbit hole of paranoia and comic absurdity that will be instantly relatable to anyone who ever spent time on a cul-de-sac.
Featuring deliciously perverse direction by Joe Dante (GREMLINS), an incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith, and an all-star supporting cast including Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun and Corey Feldman. We could not imagine a better film to salute “America’s dad” with than his best—or at least most gleefully enjoyable—role. (BRENDAN ROSS)
