The Iron Giant

USA | 1999 | 86 min | PG

The Cold War is in full swing in 1957, Sputnik 1 has just been launched, and something mysterious has fallen from the sky in Rockwell, Maine. Lonely 9-year-old Hogarth Hughes decides to investigate, and discovers a giant robot in the woods who needs a friend.

But government agent Kent Mansley has also arrived in Rockwell to investigate the strange events that have befallen the town, and he quickly fixates on Hogarth. Desperate to protect his new friend, Hogarth enlists the help of local beatnik artist Dean McCoppin, but can they save the Iron Giant from Mansley, who has now brought the Army to town? And what exactly is the Iron Giant, anyway? Unappreciated at the box office, Brad Bird’s directorial debut has since acquired the status of a cult classic, a beloved story on the nature of friendship, trust, and the battle between good and evil.
