The Passion of Joan of Arc

France | 1928 | 114 minutes | NR

A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she’d spoken to God, Jeanne d’Arc (Renee Falconetti) is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials (Eugene Silvain, Jean d’Yd). Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.

Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer
Cast: Renée Jeanne Falconetti, Eugène Silvain

Rapturous and achingly haunting, Carl Th. Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc is simply one of the most influential silent films of the era. With a mesmerizing and unparalleled performance from Renée Falconetti as the famed teenage martyr, The Passion of Joan of Arc defined what would become known as transcendental cinema.

Based on trial transcripts dating to the 15th century, every tear, drop of sweat, and letting of blood (which were unsimulated), ooze with authenticity and unrelenting torment. Falconetti’s daring portrayal, which had dire consequences on the actor’s mental health, is legendary, with Pauline Kael citing it as the “finest performance ever recorded on film.” With Dreyer’s masterful direction, Rudolph Maté’s stunning cinematography, and Hermann Warm and Jean Hugo’s meticulous production design (featuring the most expensive sets ever built for a European film up to that point), The Passion of Joan of Arc is undeniably a masterwork of film, silent or otherwise. – ALICIA FLETCHER
