ABOUT THE DESIGNING THE MOVIES SERIES
Hosted by culture writer and critic Nathalie Atkinson, this ongoing series considers the crucial contributions of below-the-line craft in both popular favorites and forgotten gems (more…)
The wisecracking screen partnership between Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn is at its peak in this fast-talking tale of high-society hijinks.
After a string of flops that labeled her box office poison, Hepburn revived her career with this movie based on the hit Broadway play (written for Hepburn by her friend Phillip Barry). It’s a magnificent comedy of manners, marriage, divorce, and flirting—not necessarily in that order—that still sparkles more than eighty years since its first release.
On the eve of her second wedding, snooty socialite Tracy Lord (Hepburn)’s suave ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) has somehow insinuated himself back into her milieu. Also circling is the cynical tabloid reporter Mike Connor (Jimmy Stewart, winning the only Academy Award of his career in the role), who soon also falls under Tracy’s spell. Complications inevitably ensue, and the love triangle plays out against the backdrop of lavish country estate settings by art director Cedric Gibbons and with elegant costumes by Adrian.
