The Witches

USA | 1990 | 91 min | PG

A young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse.

Based on the classic Roald Dahl novel, this 1990 film (directed by Nicolas Roeg) is about the adventures of Luke and his grandmother Helga, who is known for her terrifying and terrific stories about witches: demons who disguise themselves as women and lure children (their sworn enemy) to horrible, magical fates. Unfortunately for Helga and Luke, they’ve decided to spend their summer vacation at the same resort that is hosting the annual global witches conference. When the Grand High Witch unveils her new secret global strategy (lacing candy with a magic potion to turn children into mice) she decides to make Luke one of her first test subjects! Can Luke escape and warn others of the impending disaster before its too late, or will THE WITCHES triumph? A children’s classic known for amazing practical effects, suspense, and Anjelica Huston’s iconic performance, families and the young at heart are sure to love this daring, darkly funny movie! –CRYSTAL MADORE
