TWO FOR THE ROAD

USA | 1967 | 111 minutes | PG

Architect Mark Wallace (Albert Finney) and his wife, Joanna (Audrey Hepburn), travel to France to meet with an affluent client (Claude Dauphin). While there, they reflect on their first decade of marriage — memories of when they first met, of courtship and of road trips through the French countryside. As flirtation and playful quarreling turn to boredom with the banality of married life, the Wallaces struggle to rekindle their passion, while mutual infidelity threatens to tear them apart.

DETAILS

A classic 1967 Audrey Hepburn romance that’s beautiful and bittersweet!

To chart the joys and sorrows of the decade-long marriage between Mark and Joanna (Albert Finney and a luminous Audrey Hepburn), director Stanley Donen uses a non-linear structure, journeying backwards and forwards in time from meet-cute, courtship, honeymoon and early married life to present an emotionally piercing view of marriage. Filmed in the South of France (and with a heartfelt Henry Mancini score), the different stages take place at seaside holidays and Côte d’Azur cocktail parties. From the ruins, a relationship emerges.

As the movie peels back the layers to reveal the marriage’s foundations and fault lines, costume becomes essential to make sense of the shifting timelines. The progression of Hepburn’s character in particular is marked through her style, evolving from demure young co-ed to Swinging Sixties sophisticate in a short coif and cutting-edge wardrobe by Mary Quant, Ken Scott and futuristic Paco Rabanne.

Presented with an illustrated slide show introduction to 1960s fashion and culture by series host Nathalie Atkinson.
