DETAILS

Passion and jealousy run deep through the tunnels of London’s Tube in director Anthony Asquith’s UNDERGROUND—a stylish and suspenseful love triangle set amidst the hustle of bustle of late ‘20s London. With lighting and camera work borrowed from the best of German Expressionism, Asquith’s masterwork is one of the United Kingdom’s most accomplished silent works.

A porter for the London Underground (Brian Aherne), falls for elusive shopgirl (Elissa Landi) only to battle for her affections against a brooding electrician (Cyril McLaglen)—add a yearning seamstress (Norah Baring) in love with one of the men to the mix and Asquith paints a tangled web of romantic complication with dire consequences. Asquith’s pacing is lightning fast, with London as the film’s lead character—boisterous, modern, and ever evolving in its radical changes to societal stratifications. It’s a city where not even your sandwiches are safe from thieving street urchins. Where baronesses ride the same subterranean trains as the wives of fishmongers. And where impossible romantic dreams lead to treachery and tragedy. Rarely did a British silent look this sleek—a must-see underground film of the silent era.
