Days before Halloween, and on the fiftieth anniversary of George Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead, the Revue Cinema, Platform Gallery and Hektor Projects presents Toronto artist Dave Dyment’s Watching Night of the Living Dead.
The work reanimates the 1968 original entirely using footage of characters from other horror films and television series, watching the movie on TV, online, at the cinema, or drive-in. A minor clerical error caused Romero’s film to immediately fall into public domain, thus denying him any royalties from what may be the most lucrative low-budget independent feature ever made. Conversely, it almost certainly contributed to his legacy. Watching Night of the Living Dead charts the influence of the film and the proliferation of the contemporary Zombie – the last new mythology to be publicly owned.
