An average of 18 films flicker on our screen every week, but Toronto’s oldest operating cinema strives to go beyond the screen by offering engaging discussions, live music (see this month’s Silent Revue selection), even themed food and drink pairings in our newly-licensed establishment.
This month is no exception, as we welcome several critically-acclaimed guests to our stage for screenings and on-stage chats.
On April 22, Designing the Movies host Nathalie Atkinson screens the ‘50s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, followed by a conversation with Seth, the award-winning illustrator and cartoonist, author of It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken, Clyde Fans, and the subject of a recent NFB documentary, Seth’s Dominion. Accompanied by a visual essay slide-show, Atkinson and Seth will explore elements of the film’s art direction and inspirations. Get tickets.
Later that day, Bechdel Tested concludes its second season with the film Wadjda, preceded by a panel discussion on Women in Cycling, moderated by Yvonne Bambrick and featuring Siva Vijenthira, Nancy Smith Lea, Hyedie Hashimoto and Claire McFarlane. Get tickets.
Early Monthly Segments, a film collective presenting important works on 16mm and video, begins a new residency at the Revue on April 21, screening two 16mm shorts by German filmmaker Ute Aurand, who will be in attendance and discuss her work and career. Get tickets.
National Canadian Film Day is upon us on April 18. Over the last three years we have paid tribute to the works of Don Owen’s films about Toronto, premiered a restored TTC propaganda short from the late ‘40s and watched Don McKellar’s classic Last Night. This year we honour Patricia Rozema and her film I’ve Heard The Mermaids Singing. Following the screening, Rozema will be interviewed by curator and cleo journal editor Kiva Reardon. Admission is free and we look forward to seeing you.
Check below for this week’s films. For a complete listing, see our schedule.
See you at the movies!
