Centauri Summer Arts Camp

Centauri Summer Arts Camp, a residential summer camp located in the Niagara Region, is holding a fundraiser at The Revue, on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. for a school project in India.

Called the Centauri Rosebud Academy, it’s located in the community of  Mirik, where there were no free education options for students in Grade 6 and on, so that poorer families could not afford to send their children to school.

Mirik is located in the hills of Darjeeling, in West Bengal.

The Centauri camp community held a performance marathon in spring 2009 to fund construction of the school, with their project partner, Elephant Thoughts, another camp program based in Collingwood.

Now Centauri plans another fundraiser to help pay for school supplies.

The Centauri Summer Arts Camp offers 40 different arts programs for kids aged 8 to 18, including dance film, writing, fine art, photography, musical theatre, even stage combat.

Student work will be showcased. Here’s what’s on the Sunday program:

  • A retrospective of some of the best short movies created by campers at Centauri over the past decade, and in summer 2011.
  • Readings of poetry and short stories by campers and writing staff
  • A reading by Centauri's guest writer Beth Follett of Pedlar Press, who created some of the first ever writing programs at Centauri.
  • A brief presentation about the school in India, built with partner-charity Elephant Thoughts
  • Be among the first to view Dundas Street, a short movie by one of Centauri's film instructors, Sofia Bohdanowicz.
