Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski
So this furry green weirdo (Carrey) lives atop a mountain outside Whoville. He hates Christmas. Really hates it. And he schemes to stop Whoville’s holiday fest. Enter Cindy Lou Who (Momsen), a perky girl with spirit to spare. In this expanded reworking of the classic Dr. Seuss book and animated TV special, Cindy Lou and the Grinch school each other on, respectively, the true meaning of Christmas and some rather extraordinary sleigh-transport mechanics. At long last, we learn the back story of how the Grinch became an outcast and what inspired his holiday hatred. (Those Whos can be cruel, folks.) The film’s kinetic action plays out within an amazing Seuss-ian world created by Howard and zillions of Hollywood craftspeople. Above all, Carrey’s kooky performance is both rib-tickling and, by the time the roast beast hits the table, kinda touching.
