The Illusionist

The Illusionist

2010 (Sylvain Chomet) G, 80 minutes - French with English subtitles

Jean-Claude Donda, Eilidh Rankin, Duncan MacNeil, Raymond Mearns

The warm and witty story of the inevitability of change is rendered in the breathtakingly detailed animation of Sylvain Chomet’s (Les Triplettes de Belleville) newest film. The film is based on the unproduced Jacques Tati script about an aging stage magician and a young girl’s belief that his illusions are real. But the true wonder of the film lies in the illusion of the great French comedian Jacques Tati appearing once again on the big screen; his walk, his look, his subtle humour; all perfect and suffused in truly beautiful drawings rarely seen in contemporary animation. Filmed almost without dialogue and set in windswept Scotland, it is both a throwback and a loving homage to the lost world of the 1950s.
