17 Again

2009 (Burr Steers) PG, 101 min
Starring: Leslie Mann, Matthew Perry, Thomas Lennon, Zac Efron

So, it’s all about age. First, of the main character: 37-year-old Mike (a tired-looking Perry) gets thrown out by his wife, revisits his high-school, longing for those happier days, and then, through the mysterious intervention of a cheerful caretaker, becomes his handsome 17-year-old self, played by Efron. Then there’s the age of the fans: the teens enthralled with pretty-boy Efron (21 in real life). In his adolescent disguise, Mike learns some things, and ends up focusing his second youth on the happiness of his kids. Noting the director’s careful product placement of Efron, the New York Times also highlights the hilarity of Mike’s geeky friend Ned (Lennon), who falls in love with the school principal. She’s another wonderful character, a “pocket-size portrait of a sexy, thinking, adult woman who can seamlessly go from wearing high-heeled boots to pointy elf ears that’s out of this world.”
