Act of God
2009 (Jennifer Baichwal) PG, 75 min
A film about being hit by lightning, Act of God explores the metaphysical questions raised when people literally experience a bolt from the heavens. A Mexican woman who lost a child to lightning says, “God took my son to be an angel.” An American ex-hitman explains how a strike turned him into a New Age do-gooder. New York novelist Paul Auster witnessed a deadly strike as a teen at summer camp, and the event continues to influence his writing. Big picture, Toronto filmmaker Baichwal and cinematographer (and husband) Nick de Pencier, responsible for the film’s electrifying storm footage, are pondering the tension between extreme randomness and deep meaning. Why does a flash occurrence have such profound impact? There are no definitive answers, of course, but the investigation proves illuminating.
