Lowbrow comic Sandler amuses more-juvenile audiences with his signature silliness. He plays handyman Skeeter Johnson, caretaker for a hotel managed by a slime ball named Kendall (Pearce). Asked to baby sit his sister’s kids for a few days, Skeeter tucks them into bed each night with a story. And what tales! The kids hijack the narrative by creating their own plot twists, thus plunging their uncle into a series of effects-packed adventures, ranging from jousting knights to cowboy shootouts. As fantasy and reality blur, Sandler wins the heart of Jill (Russell) and dispatches Kendall. “Sandler has delivered on his promise to make a movie his kids can enjoy,” Variety writes. “What's more, he's managed to do so without alienating his core audience.”
