Black Caesar
1973 (Larry Cohen) R, 100 min
Starring: Art Lund, Fred Williamson, Gloria Hendry, Julius Harris, Phillip Roye
In this blaxploitation remake of the 1931 film Little Caesar, Tommy Gibbs (played by Williamson in a performance described as “charismatic and frighteningly fiery” by the All Movie Guide) has pushed his way to the top of Harlem’s underworld. He’s now in a position to take revenge on nasty racist cop John McKinney, who crippled Gibbs when he was a shoeshine boy. With a musical score by Godfather of Soul James Brown, including “Down and Out in New York City”, the film “is one of the true highlights of the blaxploitation genre and well worth the time for cult movie fans,” says All Movie Guide.
